Annual General Meeting
The Society’s 2017 Annual General Meeting will be held at 5.30pm on 18th September at the British Museum. The meeting will be followed by the annual Kirwan Memorial Lecture at 6pm.
Kirwan Memorial Lecture
The Royal Pyramids of Meroe — New Challenges for Archaeology and the Fieldwork of the Qatari Mission for the Pyramids of Sudan
by Mahmoud Suliman Bashir, Alexandra Riedel and Pawel Wolf
Each autumn the Society invites an eminent scholar to deliver the Kirwan Memorial Lecture, inaugurated in 2000 in honour of the first President of the Society, Sir Laurence Kirwan (1907-1999), whose interest and involvement in Sudanese archaeology spanned 60 years.
The 2017 Kirwan Memorial lecture will be delivered by Dr Mahmoud Suliman Bashir, Senior Inspector in the National Corporartion for Antiquities and Museums, Sudan, and Alexandra Riedal and Dr Pawel Wolf of the German Archaeological Institure. Mahmoud and Alexandra are co-directors of the pyramids project which is one of the many financed by the Qatar Museum Authority as part of the Qatar-Sudan Archaeological Project.
The work is focused on conservation and protection measures and on enhancing the visitor experience to the site along with new excavations and surveys of the monuments and their environs. The excavation of one of Meroe’s fine painted royal tombs will feature prominently in the lecture. The pyramids at Meroe, dating from the 3rd century BC to the 4th century AD, which marked the burials of the kings and queens of Kush, form part of the Island of Meroe World Heritage Site.
Entry to the lecture and the reception that follows is by ticket only.
