The Gabati cemetery was discovered during the SARS Begrawiya to Atbara Survey in 1993. In the face of its imminent destruction by the new Challenge Road, a single season of rescue excavation was mounted in 1994-95 in the course of which over 100 graves were excavated.
This monograph describes in detail the archaeology of this important site. It includes reports by specialists on the pottery and the other finds from the graves, some of which contained large amounts of well preserved organic material; a detailed report on the human skeletal material is in preparation.
